Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: termite n., -id suffix3.
Etymology: < termite n. + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Termitidae, family name (1837 or earlier, as alteration of †Termitides (W. E. Leach 1815, in Edinb. Encycl. IX. 139/1)). With use as noun compare French termitides, plural noun (1842 or earlier).

Of or belonging to the large and diverse termite family Termitidae (which formerly included all termite species).
