Etymology: < medieval Latin tentātīvus adjective (tentātīva noun in Scholastic Latin), < tentāt- , participial stem of tentāre for temptāre to try: see tempt v. and -ive suffix. So French tentative noun (16th cent. in Godefroy Compl.), examination, attempt; also as adjective, experimental (obsolete).
