Etymology: Partly < Latin tilia linden-tree; partly < Old French til (12–14th cent. in Godefroy), teil (13–17th cent., and modern dialect, Berry), masculine forms collateral with tille, teille, < Latin tilia; compare Italian tiglio, †tilio, beside †tilia (Florio), Spanish tilo, tila, Portuguese til, tilia. (Modern French has tilleul < Latin *tiliolus, diminutive of *tilius.)
Now rare or Obsolete.
