单词 temse
释义

temsen.

/tɛms//tɛmz/
Forms: Old English temes-, Middle English temys, Middle English temeze, tymze, Middle English–1600s temze, tem(m)es, tempse (1800s dialect), 1600s temize, 1600s–1800s tems, Middle English– temse; 1800s dialect temmis, timse, teems.
Etymology: Old English *tęmes (in tęmes-pile, tęmesian), apparently Common West Germanic; compare Middle Low German tēmes(e, temse, Low German téms (tams); Middle Dutch têms(e, teems(e, Dutch teems; East Frisian têms(e, täms(e, North Frisian tems; High German dialect zims; all feminine, meaning ‘sieve’; the cognate Old High German zemisa renders ‘furfures’, i.e. bran, siftings. These forms point to a Common West Germanic *tamis(j)ô-, coinciding with the Romanic stem tamisio- of French tamis, Italian tamigio (Florio), medieval Latin tamisium (Du Cange), by many thought to be from West Germanic. A Celtic source has been conjectured, but Thurneysen finds no satisfactory Celtic root.⁋A suggested substitution of temse for Thames in ‘to set the Thames on fire’ has no historical basis: see Thames n.
Now dialect.
A sieve, esp. one used for bolting meal; a searce, a strainer. In modern local use esp. a sieve used in brewing.
