Etymology: Middle English temptour = obsolete French tempteur (14th cent.), tenteur (16th cent.), Old French *tempteor, in nominative temptere, -teire (13–14th cent. in Godefroy) < Latin temptātōr-em, agent-noun < temptāre to tempt.
