单词 tanganyikan
释义

Tanganyikanadj.n.

Brit. /ˌtaŋɡəˈnjiːk(ə)n/, U.S. /ˌtæŋɡəˈn(j)ikən/
Forms: 1800s– Tanganyikan, 1900s– Tanganjikan (rare), 1900s– Tanganyican (rare).
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Tanganyika , -an suffix.
Etymology: < Tanganyika, the name of a lake in East Africa, and of the region (and subsequently the country) in which it is situated + -an suffix. The name of the lake is first attested in English from 1859 (with reference to a 1858 expedition); from there uses of the name gradually expanded to include the surrounding areas of land (in e.g. Tanganyika region (1889 or earlier)). The name was first used as the official name of a region when part of the former German East Africa passed into British control in 1916 as the Tanganyika Territory (which eventually gained independence as Tanganyika in 1961: see note at sense A.). The English name of the lake reflects its Swahili name Tanganyika (attested from the 19th cent.), which is of uncertain origin, but compare Nyamwezi -tanganyika (of people) to gather in great numbers, also used as the name of the lake. Variant forms. The form Tanganjikan reflects the German form of the place name (with -j- representing the glide in German orthography).
