Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic ṭawāf.
Etymology: < Arabic ṭawāf to go round, circumambulate.
Islam.
The ritual of performing seven circumambulations of the Kaaba as part of the haj to Mecca. Cf. Kaaba n.The circumambulations are performed in an anticlockwise direction, the first three at a fast pace, and the final four at a slower pace.
