Etymology: < either tavel n.1 or tavel v. + -er suffix1. Compare Middle High German zabalære person who plays the game of tables (early modern German zabeler).The form tafleri, attested once in a glossary in a 10th-cent. continental manuscript (Trier Stadtbibliothek 40), which contains some Old English glosses, is (on account of its stem vowel a) probably to be interpreted as either Old Saxon or Old High German rather than Old English.
Obsolete.
A gamester or gambler, esp. a dice player.
