1964 10 Mar. 9/4 ‘Tar~sealing originated in Taranaki,’ said Mr. Daniell [of Akura, Masterton]. ‘Metal for the roads in the New Plymouth area had to be carted all the way from the Patea River and was, of course, expensive. Traffic threw much of the metal off the roads and one day a New Plymouth councillor suggested that they ‘seal the metal on the roads’ with tar, and so ‘tarsealing’ was born.’
