Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymons: Yiddish tsatske, tshatshke.
Etymology: < Yiddish tsatske (also tshatshke) trinket, toy, knick-knack, bauble, ornament, (in extended use) pretty girl or woman < a Slavonic language (see note). Compare slightly earlier tchotchkeleh n.Forms in Slavonic languages. Compare Russian cacka toy, trinket (19th cent.; a suffixed derivative < caca toy, trinket, well-behaved child, nice person, conceited person (19th cent.; also †cacja, †cjacja)), Ukrainian cjac′ka toy, trinket, decoration, well-dressed person, self-important person ( < cjacja toy, well-behaved child, beautiful woman, self-important person (19th cent.)), Belarusian cacka toy, trinket ( < caca toy, well-behaved child), Polish cacko toy, trinket, something nice or beautiful ( < caca something nice and lovely), also †czaczko toy, trinket, pretty thing (1560, in use until 18th cent.), Czech čačka trinket ( < čača trinket, something nice or beautiful), all probably ultimately < a reduplicated syllable which is characteristic of early infantile vocalization. Formal variation in the English word. The difference of initial /ts-/ vs. /tʃ-/ reflects regional variation within Yiddish; compare also the obsolete Polish form cited above.
