Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. technico-diplomatic at sense 1 Brit. /ˌtɛknᵻkəʊdɪpləˈmatɪk/, U.S. /ˌtɛknəkoʊˌdɪpləˈmædɪk/.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: technic adj., -o- connective.
Etymology: < technic adj. + -o- connective. Compare techno- comb. form.Found from the end of the 18th cent. in a small number of formations exemplified below. Combining with second elements ultimately of Greek and Latin origin.
