Etymology: Either (i) < Brahm- (in Brahmin n.) + -ic suffix, or (ii) shortened < Brahmanic adj. Compare French brahmique (a1769 as bramique , or earlier). Compare earlier Brahmism n.
Of, relating to, or characteristic of Brahmanism or Brahmins, or more generally of Hindu peoples or Hinduism.In quot. 1838 apparently with reference to the concept in Hindu cosmology that the world is supported on the backs of mythical elephants.
