Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit brāhmī.
Etymology: < Sanskrit brāhmī (in Buddhist Sanskrit brāhmī lipi, literally ‘writing used for the sacred texts’), feminine of brāhma sacred, (in Buddhism) relating to the sacred writings, a derivative formation (with ablaut change) < brahman (neuter) Veda, sacred text (see Brahma n.1).The Sanskrit phrase Brāhmī lipi was also borrowed into English separately, and slightly earlier:1892 G. Bühler in J. Burgess Epigraphia Indica 99 The initial..pa and ba present transitional forms, while pha is still more archaic than in the Bráhmî lipi.1895 G. Bühler Orig.
