Origin: A borrowing from Persian. Also partly a borrowing from Arabic. Etymons: Persian taḵt; Arabic taḵt.
Etymology: < Persian taḵt throne, elevated seat, bedstead (Middle Persian taḵt ). In quot. 1888 apparently via Arabic taḵt. Compare Turkish taht throne. O.E.D. Suppl. (1986) gives the pronunciation as (takt) /takt/.
In the Middle East and South Asia: a sofa or long bench, a bed; (also) a platform, a podium.
