Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit brahmacārin.
Etymology: < Sanskrit brahmacārin (nominative singular masculine brahmacārī) person who spends time as a celibate religious student, person who leads a life of self-restraint < brahman (neuter) Veda, spiritual knowledge, religious life (see Brahma n.1) + cārin (adjective) moving, living, practising ( < car- to move about (see cult n.) + -in , suffix forming adjectives), probably after brahmacarya brahmacharya n.The α. forms reflect a vernacular pronunciation of the Sanskrit word.
Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism.
A man who practises brahmacharya; a man who leads a life of self-restraint, esp. regarding sexual matters. Also (Hinduism): a man in the first ashrama. Cf. brahmacharya n.
