Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Taylor.
Etymology: In sense 1 < the name of Brook Taylor (1685–1731), English mathematician, who published the theorem that was later named after him in his Methodus Incrementorum Directa et Inversa (1715). In sense 2 < the name of Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856–1915), U.S. engineer, who developed a system of scientific management. Compare Taylorism n. 2. In sense 3 < the name of Joseph Taylor (fl. 19th cent.), English wine merchant, who entered into a partnership with John Alexander Fladgate and Morgan Yeatman in 1838.
1. Mathematics. Taylor('s) series, an infinite series of the form f(a) + hf′(a) + h2f″(a)/2! + … + hn−1f(n−1)(a)/(n − 1)! + …, where f(i)(a) is the value of the ith derivative of a function f(x) at x = a; an analogous series for a function of more than one variable; Taylor's theorem, the theorem that a function f(x) can be approximated over any interval throughout which its first n derivatives exist by the first n terms of Taylor's series (with h = xa) plus a remainder dependent on f(n)(a + θh) (0 < θ < 1).
