Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Taxus , -ol suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Taxus, genus name (see taxane n.) + -ol suffix.The following show an earlier, unrelated, drug name:1907 Druggist's Circular 51 146/3 Taxol.1928 Lancet 13 Oct. 780/2 Best of all were the bile-salt preparations such as taxol.
Chemistry and Pharmacology.
Originally: a taxane with antimitotic activity isolated from the bark of the Pacific yew, Taxus brevifolia; = paclitaxel n. In later use: (a proprietary name for) this compound used as an antineoplastic drug in the treatment of certain cancers.Formula: C47H51NO14.
