Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Greek τάξις , -odont comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek τάξις arrangement, order (see taxis n.) + -odont comb. form, after scientific Latin Taxodonta, order name (M. Neumayr 1884, as German Taxodonten, in Sitzungsber. der Kaiserlichen Akad. der Wissensch. 1883: Math.-Naturwissensch. Classe 88 Abt. I. 388).

A. adj.
Of the shell of a bivalve mollusc: having the hinge formed by a long series of similar teeth and sockets, typified (in some classification schemes) by the order Taxodonta, which contains the ark shells. Also: (of the hinge or dentition) having this form.In most recent schemes the taxon Taxodonta is no longer used. Ark shells are now usually placed in the order Arcoida.
