Etymology: Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element.proper name Tasmania , -an suffix. < Tasmania, the name of an island state of Australia, located south of the Australian mainland + -an suffix.The island was discovered by Abel Tasman (1603–59), Dutch explorer, who reached and sighted its west coast on 24 November 1642. Tasman named it Van Diemen's Land, in honour of the then Governor-General of the Dutch West Indies. In 1856 it was officially renamed Tasmania after its Dutch discoverer.
