Etymology: Probably an alteration of bog-standard adj., after box n.2, rationalized as meaning ‘in standard manufactured form (i.e. unmodified), such as one might expect straight from the manufacturer's box’; see discussion at bog-standard adj. Compare earlier (apparently unrelated) box standard n.
colloquial (chiefly British). Usually depreciative.
Ordinary, basic, standard; without extra features or modification; (hence) unexceptional or uninspired. Cf. bog-standard adj.
