Originally U.S.
An informal debate (often of some length) on a matter of public, usually political, interest, originally between the staff and students of a university. Hence, a conference attended by members of a profession on topics of common concern. Also loosely, a lecture or meeting held for the purpose of discussion or disseminating information.
