Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: box n.2, kite n.
Etymology: < box n.2 + kite n.
1. A kite having the form of one or more box-shaped frames with open ends and fabric panels towards the ends of each side.Kites of this kind were first made by Lawrence Hargrave of Sydney, Australia (see Hargrave n.), who used a train of paired boxes to lift himself into the air in order to make meteorological observations.
