Origin: Probably an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Probably < the (reduplicated) syllable /ta/ which is characteristic of early infantile vocalization. Compare earlier da-da int.
A. int. A nursery expression for ‘Good-bye’; now also in general colloquial use.
