Origin: Probably either (i) a borrowing from Dutch. Or (ii) a borrowing from Middle Low German. Etymons: Dutch tafel; Middle Low German taffel.
Etymology: Probably < either Dutch tafel or Middle Low German taffel (for both, see table n.). With taffel board n. compare Middle Low German tāfelbret board forming the top of a table, (rare) tāfelbōrt (in uncertain sense, perhaps ‘board forming the top of a table’), and also earlier table-board n. 2.In form tathil with assimilation of the medial consonant to the initial t-.
Scottish (chiefly northern and eastern). Now rare.
A table; (in later use) spec. a small one.Recorded earliest in taffel board n. at Compounds.
