Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: Greek ταινία , -ite suffix1; German Tänit.
Etymology: Partly (in sense 1) < ancient Greek ταινία ribbon (see taenia n.) + -ite suffix1; and partly (in sense 2) < German Tänit (Reichenbach 1861) < ancient Greek ταινία ribbon + German -it -ite suffix1, so called on account of the shape of its crystals.
Mineralogy.
1. A variety of feldspar occurring in striped crystals.
