Etymology: < Korean taegwondo (also transliterated as t'aekwŏndo) < tae- to kick, to stomp ( < Middle Chinese) + gwon- fist ( < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese quán ) + do way ( < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese dào way: see tao n. and compare budo n.), alteration (with substitution of the middle element) of taesudo (compare su- hand: see Tang Soo Do n.), itself after dangsudo Tang Soo Do n., denoting the set of arts which taekwondo was designed to unify; probably further influenced by the etymologically unrelated taekgyeon, denoting another traditional art.

A Korean martial art particularly characterized by the use of a combination of kick movements in combat, and widely practised as a sport.
