Etymology: < early Scandinavian *sýt (compare Norwegian regional syt care, anxiety (1646), Swedish regional syta care, hardship), reflecting a by-form (with i-mutation) of the early Scandinavian word represented by Old Icelandic sút sickness, grief, sorrow, affliction, Faroese sút grief, anxiety, pain, Norwegian (Nynorsk) sut worry, care, anxiety, sickness, further origin uncertain and disputed; perhaps < the same Scandinavian base as the Scandinavian forms cited at sought n. Compare syte v.
Obsolete (Scottish in later use).
