Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French systyle; Latin systȳlos.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French systyle (1547 as adjective; the use as noun is apparently not paralleled until later than in English: 1691), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin systȳlos having the columns two diameters apart (Vitruvius) < ancient Greek συν- syn- prefix + στῦλος column, pillar (see styloid adj.).Greek *σύστυλος is apparently not attested.

Of a building, colonnade, architectural style, etc.: having or characterized by close intercolumniation such that the distance between the columns equals two diameters of a column. Cf. pycnostyle adj.; diastyle adj.
