-idansuffixOrigin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: arachnidan adj. and n. at arachnid n. Derivatives, fistulidan n., phalangidan n., serpulidan n. at serpula n. Derivatives, zygaenidan n. at zygaena n. Derivatives. Etymology: < -idan (in e.g. arachnidan adj. and n. at arachnid n. Derivatives, fistulidan n., phalangidan n., serpulidan n. at serpula n. Derivatives, zygaenidan n. at zygaena n. Derivatives, etc.). Compare -idian suffix. The ending -idan occurs from at least the early 19th cent. in a large group of scientific nouns and adjectives formed with the suffix -an suffix, whose bases are either English plural nouns in -ida , or (more usually) scientific Latin plural nouns in -ida , -idae , or -ides (see -id suffix3). These denote or designate members of specific taxa. From the first half of the 19th cent., -idan was used on the model of these words to form a small number of nouns and adjectives (all technical terms in biology) within English: neritidan n., patellidan n., and (in late 19th cent., modelled on two scientific Latin taxa) polycystidan adj. Few formations in this element remain in common use. This entry has been updated (OED Third Edition, November 2010; most recently modified version published online June 2021). < suffix |
