Etymology: Probably < box (in box grain n. at box n.² Compounds 6, although this is first attested slightly later) + calf n.¹Apparently so named by Edward L. White, of White Bros. & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, in 1890. The picture of a calf in a box was adopted as an advertising device. It has alternatively been suggested that the first element is < the name of Joseph Box Ltd., London, a well-known English boot and shoe maker, but there is no known connection with this firm.

A kind of smooth, firm leather made from calfskin tanned with chrome salts and having a fine grain pattern, used esp. for making shoe uppers. In early use: spec. calfskin leather with a fine grain pattern of box-shaped creases; cf. box grain n. at box n.² Compounds 6.
