Origin: Formed within English, by conversion; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: syntagmatic adj.
Etymology: < syntagmatic adj. (although this is first attested slightly later; see -ic suffix 2), after French syntagmatique (F. de Saussure a1913, published in Cours de linguistique générale (1916) ii. v. 194).
Linguistics.
(The study of) the relationships between linguistic elements that occur sequentially in speech or writing.
