Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French syntagmatique.
Etymology: < French syntagmatique (F. de Saussure a1913, published in Cours de linguistique générale (1916) ii. v. 177) < syntagme syntagma n. (compare syntagma n. 4) + -atique -atic suffix.Compare Byzantine Greek συνταγματικός of or like a treatise. With sense 1 compare earlier paradigmatic adj. 2 and slightly earlier syntagmatics n. With sense 2 compare slightly later syntagm n. 2b.
1. Linguistics. Of or relating to the sequential relationship between linguistic forms; denoting this relationship. Cf. syntagm n. 2a.Frequently opposed to paradigmatic. See paradigmatic adj. 2 and note at syntagm n. 2a.
