Etymology: < Swahili -swahili (in Swahili Waswahili , denoting the people (singular Mswahili ) and Kiswahili , denoting the language: see Kiswahili n.), either < Arabic sawāḥil (plural of sāḥil coast, boundary), used to denote the coastal regions of East Africa and (hence) the Swahili people (with regular addition of -i within Swahili, for phonological reasons) or < Arabic sawāḥilī Swahili person, use as noun of sawāḥilī coastal + < sawāḥil + ī -i suffix2.Compare the following earlier example of a related place name, although this probably reflects Arabic sawāḥil :1625 S. Purchas Pilgrimes I. iii. ix. 261 A small barke from the coast of Swahell or Magadoxo [i.e. Mogadishu], with Slaues, Elephants teeth, Amber.Arabic sāḥil also underlies the name of the Sahel region: see Sahelian adj.
