Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: Latin sustent- , sustinēre , -ion suffix1; sustentation n.
Etymology: Either < classical Latin sustent-, past participial stem of sustinēre sustain v. + -ion suffix1, after e.g. retention n. (beside retain v.), etc., or an alteration of sustentation n. by association with the same models.Quot. 1515 at sense 1a is from a testament in which sustentacion sustentation n. also occurs, and may show an error for this word. Compare the following, which apparently shows a transmission error for sustentation n.:1542 A. Borde Compend. Regyment Helth vi. sig. C.iv The fyrst parte must serue to prouyde for meate and drynke, & all other necessary thynges for the sustencyon [1562 sustentacion] of the howseholde.
