Etymology: < bottom adj. + line n.2In later use in sense 2a perhaps partly after Yiddish untershte shure (1936 or earlier in this sense), the second element of which is shure line (of text) < post-biblical Hebrew šūrāh line (of text) (probably already in biblical Hebrew in sense ‘row of olive trees or vines’ in an apparently isolated attestation in Job 24:11).
