Etymology: Probably < a (syncopated) past participle form of swench v. (compare forms at that entry), although that verb is not attested after early Middle English (however, swench n. remained current until the 15th cent.).Compare Old English geswenced , geswenct (adjective) troubled, afflicted, (prefixed) past participle of swench v. (compare y- prefix), also in adjectival use and in contexts implying exhaustion:OE Ælfric Catholic Homilies: 2nd Ser. (Cambr.
