Sense 3 (the Tibetan funerary text) represents an extension of sense 2 (the ancient Egyptian funerary text) within English. The Tibetan name of the text is bar.do thos.sgrol (also often transliterated as Bardo Thödol ; < bar.do intermediate space between death and rebirth (see bardo n.) + thos to hear + sgrol to liberate, set free), so called from the practice of reading the book aloud over the body of a recently deceased person, in the belief that he or she will be liberated from the intermediate state between life and death by hearing it.
