Forms: see super- prefix and sensual adj.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: super- prefix, sensual adj.
Etymology: < super- prefix + sensual adj., after German übersinnlich, adjective (1620 in the passage translated in quot. 1647), also used as noun (1786 in the passage translated in quot. 1798 at supersensible n.).In the phrase supersensual sensual with reference to German übersinnlich sinnlich in Goethe Faust I. (1808) Marthens Garten (compare quot. 1833 at sense A. 1; also in Urfaust (a1775)), used by Mephistopheles to the aged but magically rejuvenated Faustus, who is trying to woo a young woman. The expression plays on the most common associations of German übersinnlich supernatural and sinnlich (sexually) sensual, and their more general senses denoting things beyond and within the realm of the senses, respectively. Attempts to translate this into English have focused on different aspect of this; compare quot. 1833 at sense A. 1, quots. 1834 and 1835 at sense A. 2, as well as quot. 1839 at supersensitive adj. and n.; compare also:1835 J. Anster tr. J. W. von Goethe Faustus 242 Most sentimental sensualist,—Philosopher at once and beast,—Led by the nose by a young flirt!
