Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin superseminat-, superseminare.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin superseminat-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of superseminare to sow on top of an earlier sowing (Vetus Latina, Vulgate) < classical Latin super- super- prefix + sēmināre seminate v., itself after ancient Greek ἐπισπείρειν to sow, sow again ( < ἐπι- epi- prefix + σπείρειν to sow: see sperm n.). Compare earlier oversow v.Originally with specific reference to the following biblical passage:a1425 (c1395) Bible (Wycliffite, L.V.) (Royal) (1850) Matt. xiii. 25 Whanne men slepten, his enemy cam, and sewe aboue [L. superseminavit, Gk. ἐπέσπειρεν] taris in the myddil of whete.1582 Bible (Rheims) Matt. xiii. 25 His enemy came and oversowed cockle among the wheate.
Obsolete.
1. transitive. To sow on the top of something previously sown. Also intransitive with object implied. Chiefly figurative with allusion to the parable of the tares (Matthew 13:24, 25).
