Etymology: < classical Latin super numerum above or beyond the number ( < super (see super- prefix) + numerum , accusative of numerus number: see number n.) + -ate suffix3. With sense 1 compare post-classical Latin supernumerare to enumerate (6th cent.). Compare supernumerary adj. In sense 2 after supernumerary adj.
