Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: sun n.1, rise v.; sun n.1, rising n.
Etymology: Partly (i) < sun n.1 + the present participle of rise v., and partly (ii) < sun n.1 + rising n. In early use after Anglo-Norman solail levaunt and Old French soleill levant (c1100), and also classical Latin solis ortum.
Now rare (chiefly archaic or poetic in later use). Largely superseded by sunrise n.
