Etymology: < Sunny Jim, the nickname of a character depicted as a cheerful and energetic old gentleman, used to promote the ‘Force’ brand of breakfast cereal; compare sunny adj. 4. Compare later Sonny Jim n.The character was created by American advertising copywriter Minnie Maude Hanff (1879–1942), in a series of rhyming jingles; these featured a miserable curmudgeon named ‘Jim Dumps’, who becomes sprightly and cheerful on consumption of Force wheat flakes and so earns himself the nickname ‘Sunny Jim’. Hanff's verses, with illustrations by Dorothy Ficken (1886–1978), first appeared in advertisements for Force flakes in summer 1902:1902 Brooklyn Daily Eagle 29 July 6/5 ‘Force’ can be supplied to him, Jim Dumps has changed to ‘Sunny Jim’.1903 Freeland (Pa.)
