Compare Old English Sunnanǣfen the evening before Sunday, Saturday evening ( < Sunnan- (in Sunnandæg Sunday n.) + even n.1); compare also Old Frisian sunnēvend, snēvend Saturday, Old High German sunnūnāband Saturday evening (Middle High German sunnenābent, sunābent Saturday, German (chiefly central and northern) Sonnabend Saturday), all ultimately after post-classical Latin dominica vespera Saturday evening (after sunset) (11th cent.), or similar expressions. The continental Germanic forms were perhaps modelled on the Old English, and spread by missionary activity.
