Etymology: < Arabic sunnī (adjective) of or belonging to the larger of the two main branches of Islam, (noun) a person belonging to this branch of Islam < sunna Sunnah n. + -i suffix2. Compare Sunnite n., Sunnite adj.In use as noun originally via Italian †Sunnì (1588 in the passage translated in quot. 1595). In use as adjective originally via French Sunni (1671 in the passage translated in quot. 1686). In plural form Sunni after the unchanged Arabic plural form. N.E.D. (1917) gave a pronunciation with long final vowel, (sɒ·ni) /ˈsʌniː/.

The Muslims who collectively form the larger of the two main branches of Islam, which differs from Shia in its understanding of the Sunnah, its conception of religious leadership, and its acceptance of the first three caliphs. Also in singular: a Muslim who follows this branch of Islam.From the 18th cent. the original collective use of Sunni has become increasingly indistinct from unchanged plural use of the count noun (cf., e.g., quots. 1897, 2003).
