Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin supplicavit, supplicāvit, supplicāre.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin supplicavit, name of a writ (c1365), specific use of classical Latin supplicāvit ‘he (or she) has supplicated’, 3rd person singular perfect indicative of supplicāre supplicate v.; so called from the first words of the writ: supplicavit nobis ‘he (or she) has supplicated us’.
Law. Now historical.
A writ requiring a person or persons to keep the peace.The writ was chiefly used in cases where one person was in danger of being harmed by another, e.g. a domestic dispute.
