Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin superioratus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin superioratus period of office of head of a religious community (1400 in a British source) < classical Latin superior superior adj. + -ātus -ate suffix1. Compare Italian superiorato (17th cent.), German Superiorat (mid 18th cent. or earlier), Portuguese superiorato (1836). Compare earlier superiorship n. 2 and superiority n. 2d.
The position, office, or status of (a) superior; spec. the position or office of head of a religious community (see superior n. 3a). Also: the period in which this is held.
