A higher court of a legal system, typically one whose jurisdiction is not limited by reference to person, place, subject matter, etc., and whose decisions have weight as precedents. The precise role and status of superior courts varies between countries and over time. In England and Wales, the superior courts are not subject to any other court except by way of appeal. They include the Court of Appeal, the High Court, and the Crown Court; the High Court and the Crown Court have both trial and appellate jurisdiction. In the United States there is variation between states, in some cases with no corresponding inferior court.
