Origin: A borrowing from an Algonquian language.
Etymology: < a Southern New England Algonquian compound (compare Massachusett sonksq , sonkusq queen, mistress, Narragansett saunks queen, sachem’s wife; < the base of Massachusett sontim , Narragansett sâchim sachem n. + an unstressed variant of the word for ‘woman’; compare Massachusett -usq and the stressed form Narragansett squàw squaw n.), with remodelling of the second element after squaw n.Compare the following, apparently isolated example of a shortening based on a reinterpretation of the word as an English compound; the passage is apparently based on a much shorter account by Ezra Stiles, who refers to the woman as squaw and his Pequot wife (1761):1804 A. Holmes in Coll. Mass. Hist. Soc. 1st Ser. IX. 83 (note) Awaking one night,..and finding his sunck [queen] lying near another Indian, he..took his knife, and cut three strokes on each of her cheeks.
Now historical.
Among the North American Indian peoples of southern New England and eastern Long Island, New York: a woman of a ruling family; a queen or female chief ruling in her own right, or the wife, sister, or daughter of a sachem or chief (see sachem n. 1). Cf. squaw sachem n. at squaw n. Compounds 2.
