Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit sundarī.
Etymology: < Sanskrit sundarī, use as noun of the feminine of sundara beautiful, handsome, variant of (earlier) sūnara handsome (probably with an unattested original sense ‘capable’; cognate with Avestan hunara skill, Old Persian hūnara , written u-va-na-ra ), ultimately < the Indo-European base of su- good (see eu- comb. form) + the Indo-European base of nṛ man, hero (see andro- comb. form).
Any of several tropical Asian trees of the genus Heritiera (family Malvaceae) which grow abundantly in India and yield a hard and durable timber; esp. H. fomes and H. littoralis. Also: the wood of such a tree. Frequently attributive.
