Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin suppuratorium; Latin suppūrātōrius.
Etymology: As noun < post-classical Latin suppuratorium (1609 in the passage translated in quot. 1657 at sense A.), use as noun of neuter of suppūrātōrius (see below). As adjective < classical Latin suppūrātōrius concerned with festering sores < suppūrāt- , past participial stem of suppūrāre suppurate v. + -ōrius -ory suffix2. Compare French †suppuratoire , adjective (1636; obsolete after 1700). Compare earlier suppurative n. and suppurative adj., and slightly later suppurant n.
